How to Prepare Your Home for Fall

As the vibrant days of summer give way to crisp air and falling leaves, it's time to get your home ready for my favorite time of the year, the fall season. Fall isn't just a time for pumpkin spice lattes and cozy sweaters; it’s also the perfect time to take care of home maintenance tasks to ensure your property is prepared for cooler weather. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you transition your home smoothly into fall.

1. Inspect Your Heating System

Before the chill sets in, ensure your heating system is ready to keep your home warm and cozy. You should have an annual maintenance program with a local HVAC company to come visit your home once during the Springtime and once during the Fall season.

  • Check your furnace: Call in a professional to inspect and service your furnace or heating system. This ensures that it operates efficiently, avoiding any breakdowns during colder months.

  • Change filters: Replace the air filters in your furnace. Clean filters improve air quality and efficiency, which can lower your heating bills.

  • Test your thermostat: Check that your thermostat is functioning properly and adjust the temperature settings for fall comfort.

2. Seal Windows and Doors

Drafty windows and doors can lead to heat loss and increased energy bills during fall and winter.

  • Check for drafts: Run your hand around windows and doors to feel for cold air. If you detect a draft, consider weather stripping or caulking to seal gaps.

  • Add insulation: For older windows, adding storm windows or insulating film can make a significant difference in maintaining heat.

  • Install door sweeps: Place door sweeps on exterior doors to prevent cold air from slipping under and reduce heating costs.

3. Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Falling leaves can clog your gutters, leading to water damage.

  • Clear out debris: Remove leaves, sticks, and other debris from your gutters and downspouts to prevent water backup.

  • Check for leaks: Inspect your gutters for cracks, holes, or sagging, and repair any damages.

  • Ensure proper drainage: Ensure that downspouts are directing water at least 3-5 feet away from the foundation to prevent flooding.

4. Prepare Your Lawn and Garden

Fall is the ideal time to prep your lawn and garden for the cooler months.

  • Rake leaves: Regularly rake up fallen leaves to prevent them from suffocating your grass and turning into a soggy mess.

  • Fertilize: Apply a fall fertilizer to your lawn to promote root growth, making it more resilient in the winter and giving you a lush lawn in the spring.

  • Prune shrubs and trees: Trim back dead branches to prevent them from falling during storms. It’s also a good time to tidy up bushes and hedges.

5. Inspect Your Roof

Your roof is your first defense against the elements, and fall is an excellent time for a roof inspection. Work with a local roofing company to inspect your roof.

  • Check for missing or damaged shingles: Replace any damaged shingles to prevent leaks and potential water damage.

  • Look for wear and tear: Inspect flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights for cracks or gaps.

  • Clean your chimney: If you have a fireplace, now is the time to clean and inspect the chimney to prevent creosote buildup, which can lead to dangerous fires.

6. Stock Up on Essentials

With Fall comes shorter days and the potential for storms, so it's smart to be prepared.

  • Check emergency supplies: Make sure you have flashlights, candles, batteries, and blankets on hand in case of a power outage.

  • Restock firewood: If you have a wood-burning fireplace or stove, stock up on firewood for those chilly fall nights.

  • Inspect your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: Test detectors to ensure they are functioning properly, and replace the batteries if necessary.

7. Deep Clean the Interior

Fall is also a great time for an indoor refresh before you spend more time inside during the colder months.

  • Clean windows and blinds: Let in as much fall light as possible by washing windows and dusting blinds.

  • Rotate and clean rugs: Shake out your rugs and rotate them to distribute wear evenly. Fall is also a great time to bring in heavier, cozier rugs.

  • Dust and vacuum: Thoroughly dust, especially hard-to-reach places like ceiling fans and vents, to prevent allergens from circulating in the air.

Prepping your home for fall doesn’t just enhance its curb appeal and cozy factor—it also ensures your home remains functional and energy-efficient during the colder months. With these tips, you'll be ready to enjoy the beauty of the season with peace of mind that your home is in great shape.
